Quiet and Right

No version of “Because the Night” can ever compare to the visceral original by Patti Smith. In this unplugged rendition, the Maniacs didn’t even bother trying – and thereby succeeded in creating a fine reinterpretation.

It’s not as powerful as the original, but – hey – it’s unplugged. The music is quieter, and Merchant’s vocals are more subdued. But in a way, that simply makes it more listenable and maybe even more beautiful. _{(Image source)}

10,000 Maniacs

10,000 Maniacs is a US alternative rock band that has been active since 1981.

By 1985, they had recorded 2 albums and attracted commercial attention and critical acclaim. Their heyday was in the late 1980s–early 1990s, when Natalie Merchant was their lead singer.

In January 1993, 10,000 Maniac played at MTV’s Inaugural Ball for President Bill Clinton. The following April, the band played on “MTV Unpluggged,” and released an album of the performance that October.
