“Route 66” (1965 – original from 1946)

Just like the Stones, the Northern Irish band Them included a cover of “Route 66” on their debut album.

Frenetic and Fiery

On the heels of the Stones’ “super-charged” 1964 version, Them recorded this even wilder version the following year. With its heavy rhythms, frenetic piano, jangling guitars, and Van Morrison’s fiery vocals, this “hyper-charged” rendition eclipsed even the Stones’ rocking version. _{(Image source)}

Them

Them was a band that began playing in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1964. It soon came to be identified with other UK bands as part of the “British Invasion” of the US.

Doors Opening for Them

In 1965, Them toured Great Britain. In 1966, the band toured the US, where it had a 2-week gig at the infamous LA club Whisky a Go Go. The opening band was an up’n’coming LA band called The Doors.

Musta been Glorious

On the final night at the Whiskey, Them and The Doors jammed together on stage, respectively led by their singers Van Morrison and Jim Morrison. Together, the bands played a 20-minute version of Van Morrison’s now-classic song “Gloria,” followed by a 25-minute version of Wilson Pickett’s hit “In the Midnight Hour.” _{(Image source)}
