Being green and eco-clean was never as popular as it is now. From globally celebrating earth day to the new surge of items that claim to be eco-friendly and the rise of veganism, it seems apparently more than ever that we humans must change something in order to keep the world clean. But here’s some events that have or continue to impact the world.

Linfen
We mentioned the city of Norilsk in Russia being one of the most polluted cities in the world. Amongst that same category, we list Linfen, China. Coal mining contributes to the harmful air pollution in Linfen, which has a population of over 4,000,000 people, clearly overpopulated. The city has an area of 7,828 square miles or 20,275 square kilometers yet the entire city gets fogged with a yellow smog the entire year. Mining here has been around since the late 70s, with this city alone part of the biggest sources of pollution for the entire province. The Baia Mare Cyanide Spill
Nearly 20 years ago, the municipality of Baia Mare in Romania experienced a leak of cyanide that would then flow into the Somes River. This cyanide spill took place in 2000, with the polluted waters of the river flowing into the Tisza, pictured here with people working to clean the water. The gold-mining operating company Aurul strived to clean up the toxic byproduct of gold mining that had been spread by the wind. They tried cleaning it up with gold cyanidation. But the dam full of the contaminated water burst, sending over 3,500,000 cubic feet or 100,000 cubic meters of it into the farmlands and water sources.Patna
It might not look it in this picture, but another one of the most polluted cities in the world is Patna--the capital city of the state of Bihar, India. It has a population of over 2 million people, the 18th largest urban agglomeration in the country. The air pollution in Patna has become a huge concern for the past couple years, with the level of respirable suspended particulate matter 3 and a half times higher than the 100 micro-gram limit per cubic meter. As one of the fastest growing cities in the world, Patna also is a source of grain, sesame, sugarcane, and other agricultural products that get affected by the harmful air.Citarum River
Aside from the most polluted cities in the world, now we’re going to talk about the most polluted river. Although the size might pale in comparison to the huge garbage patch in the middle of the ocean, the waste in the Citarum River is more easily seen than the Pacific Garbage Patch. The Citarum River, the largest river in West Java, Indonesia has served as a major supply for fishery, drinking water, agricultural purposes, electricity and more. Yet the high amount of human activity and nearby textiles have only made the pollution more apparently. Over 2,000 industries contaminate the river, with 5 million people living in the basin as well.Sidoarjo Mud Flow
In 2006, a mud volcano erupted in Sidoarjo, East Java, which has resulted in this a mudflow that has been affecting the environment since then. Referred to as the Sidoarjo Mud Flow, this photo shows the surrounding vegetation and the mudflow in the middle. This mud volcano counts as the biggest of its kind in the world, which occurred as a result of a natural gas well that ended up getting blown out by either a distant earthquake or by the drilling of PT Lapindo Brantas oil exploration company. The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill
The second largest spill in the United States happened in the late 80s, an event also considered to have caused the most damage by humans in environmental history. The Exxon Valdez Spill took place in Prince William Sound in Alaska and would spill about 10.8 million US gallons of crude oil into the sea for days. The tanked owned by Exxon was on its way to Long Beach California but would collide with the Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound. Wildlife founds itself highly affected by the spill and many efforts were put forth to clean up the spill and save the animals. Even now, there’s still oil that can be found in the Prince William Sound.Deepwater Horizon
Whether you heard about it primarily on the news or you saw that movie based on the event that came out not too long ago, most people will remember the incident at Deepwater Horizon, also called the BP Oil Spill. The spill occurred in 2010, the largest marine oil spill in the petroleum industry’s history. The Department of Justice fined BP for $4.525 billion for the damage. The oil would flow for about 87 days, with oil clean up crews working the whole time on Louisiana’s shoreline.
