Unless the record deal was from one of my best friends, and, or it was a company label that we owned together with ideals and values that we see eye to eye on, I wouldn't accept a record deal from any music industry company because I know what to expect and look out for in terms of protecting my creative aspirations, and my own vision
The music industry is 98% business, 2% music. And depending on the fine print of your contract and the length there of, that 2% could also be the percentage of what you're entitled to for the music you distribute through the record label that represents you.
I have been approached a few times before to join a label, but I like to be my own boss when it comes to managing my own music career. When you are passionate about something, it is best not to always throw a middle man in-between unless you really know what service they are providing you to elevate your progress to the next level.
I get to go to the studio whenever I want, write whatever I want to write about, perform music wherever I want, and to whomever I choose, and I can get involved in any kind of collaborations that I feel are purposeful and impactful in the grand scheme of things towards being a positive influence in the world.
These kind of creative freedoms are priceless, not to mention staying true to my own values and morals in regards to the path of success I have continually created for myself through hard work, consistency, growth and originality.
I am not telling anyone not to get a record deal, but for me, it isn't something I am outwardly seeking. The community on Steemit is an amazing place to showcase my music, as well as in intimate settings and open mic out in the real world where I am a reachable person and not just a mainstream media portrayal of the marketed version of myself as a corporately funded artist.
Who knows, maybe I will have my own record label down the road, anything is possible, but my main focus is my music, the message and intentions behind the songs I create and perform and the lasting effects they have on all generations who receive what I share with them.
If music is your passion, keep at it, and stay smart with how you move in your own music career. This applies to any profession, I wouldn't jump at the first contract deal opportunity thrown at me, we never know what will happen in the future, so I just keep a positive outlook and keep improving myself on what I need to focus on. Time to practice piano and work on some new material
