Howdy folks, today is another babysitting day, and my granddaughter and I like MUSIC. The trick I’m using to introduce her to new songs is to play tracks that I like mixed between songs that I know SHE really likes so that she associates the new cuts with music she already enjoys. (It works…with some songs…)
Here is a link to this playlist. It’s 45 songs---pretty long---and includes a lot of new wave and electronic dance tunes, along with a handful of novelty songs because I like novelty tunes. I like to laugh and I like to dance… This is a very upbeat playlist with only one or two mellower tracks for flavor.
Ready? Here we go!
Babysitting Alternate Playlist (2020) (45 songs)
- Cyndi Lauper – “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” [1983]
- Mr.Chicken – “Bohemian Rhapsody” [2019?] (Queen cover)
- The Go-Go’s – “Vacation” [1982]
- They Might Be Giants – “Istanbul (not Constantinople)” [1990]
- Stereo MC’s – “Connected” [1992]
- Beastie Boys – “Hey Ladies” [1989]
- Thompson Twins – “Doctor! Doctor!” [1984]
- Bananarama – “Venus” [1986]
- Deee-Lite – “Groove is in the Heart” [1990]
- Devo – “Whip It” [1980]
- Candy Flip – “Strawberry Fields Forever” [1990] (Beatles cover)
- The Farm – “Groovy Train” [1991]
- They Might Be Giants – “Birdhouse in Your Soul” [1990]
- Cyndi Lauper – “True Colors” [1986]
- The Cure – “Just Like Heaven” [1987]
- Fun Boy Three – “Our Lips are Sealed” [1983] (Technically, this was co-written by Terry Hall and Belinda Carlisle, who were romantically linked for a bit, and then co-released by each of their bands! I prefer the F.B.T. version, although the Go-Go’s cut is also very good!)
- The Waitresses – “I Know What Boys Like” [1982]
- The Shins – “New Slang” [2001]
- Pixies – “Here Comes Your Man” [1987]
- Weezer – “Buddy Holly” [1994]
- The Presidents of the United States of America – “Volcano” [1996]
- The White Stripes – “Fell in Love with a Girl” [2001]
- Karoshi Bros. – “Love the World” [2007]
- Soft Cell – “Entertain Me” [1981]
- Yello – “Oh Yeah” [1985]
- Herbie Hancock – “Rockit” [1983] (featuring some excellent, early, hip-hop scratching by Grand Mixer DXT!!!)
- Soft Cell vs. Depeche Mode – “Tainted Jesus (Lobsterdust Mashup)” [2012?]
- House of Pain vs. Queen vs. AC/DC – “We Will Jump You (Partyben Mashup)” [2010?]
- Dread Zeppelin – “Heartbreaker (At the End of Lonely Street)” [1990] (Dread Zep does Led Zep and Elvis covers and medleys, and on later albums, like The Fun Sessions, they branch out into other bands. Great stuff!)
- Split Enz – “One Step Ahead” [1981]
- The Muppets – “Once in a Lifetime” [1996] (Talking Heads cover)
- Talking Heads – “Wild Wild Life” [1986]
- Blondie – “Rapture” [1980]
- The Muppets – “Put the Lime in the Coconut” [1979] (Harry Nilsson cover)
- Ministry – “Revenge” [1983] (excellent new wave cut before Al went all hardcore…)
- Hepcat – “No Worries” [1997]
- The B-52’s – “Love Shack” [1989]
- Fall Out Boy – “Uma Thurman” [2015] (includes an interpolation of The Munsters theme song)
- Toni Basil – “Mickey” [1981]
- Neneh Cherry – “Buffalo Stance” [1988]
- Duran Duran – “Burning the Ground” [1989] (This is a mega-mix dance track that samples and mixes a bunch of Duran cuts into one, 4 minute masterpiece.)
- Suburban Lawns – “Janitor” [1981]
- The Bangles – “Manic Monday” [1986]
- Thomas Dolby – “Radio Silence” [1982]
- LCD Soundsystem – “Someone Great” [2007]
That’s it! The fun is DONE… We’ve already played it two times through today, so I know it’s effective (at keeping a nine-month-old and a 47 year old entertained!) The image for this post is a snap of my t.v. during the Thomas Dolby video, with some minor digital modifications (like the words…) (Sorry there aren’t any real REVIEWS this time, but with a baby here, I was lucky to get the dang LIST typed out! Thank goodness for naps!!!)
Talk at you folks later!!!
