This Sunday's sounds (previously my music monday) is born out of grief for something that hasn't quite happened just yet. I'm still visiting my folks and finding the house loud with music. Doesn't matter Dad's got cancer, and is contemplating his a-dying, the vibe around there is always the same - I pull up in the driveway and hear tunes drifting out the windows. Sometimes he's asleep under a blanket on the couch, having drifted off to the tunes he's listening to. It makes me tear up to think one day I'll be visiting that home and it'll be silence - unless Mum starts being a tune selector, which I can't see happening. It was always, always, Dad.
I love this photo. This was last weekend - my son was around, and Dad gave him a box of vinyl. Here's us going through it. The three of us are the music lovers in the family - the totally obsessed ones. Jarrah's girl took this photo, aware of the poignancy of this moment!
Anyway, here's a few songs that will always remind me of Dad and bring him right in the room with me, even if he can't call me up and wax lyrical about a tune he's heard, insisting I drop EVERYTHING and listen to it RIGHT NOW.
The first one is a Dylan song. It contains one of my favourite lines ever - it's just pretty and lyrical: 'the ghosts of electricity howl in the bones of her face'. However, this is Chris Smithers doing it - it's just beautiful. Enjoy.
Chris Smithers also does a beautiful version of Missisipi John Hurt's 'CandyMan' which I also adore. I also love Taj Mahal's version, which reminds me of Dad too - he was (is) always a big Taj Mahal fan. Giant Step is one of the albums of my childhood. Well, one of hundreds, lol. Dad really did play ALOT of music!
Whilst Dad wasn't a fan of Springsteen (though he very much appreciated him), he is a fan of Harry Manx, and went and saw him live too, which would have been nice. This one is more my bias, as you know, I'm a secret lover of 'I'm on Fire'. The sound of the sitar is so beautiful.
What tunes remind you of your folks?
