Day by Day
I have been an accompanying pianists for singers, song teams and choirs for many years now.
Sometimes when singers sing a song, there are about 3 or 4 stanzas in the song.
If the song is played 4 times using the same techniques and styles, it becomes very boring.
This is where the challenge of a pianist comes in.
As a pianist accompanying the singer, I need to play the song in varying moods to keep the interest of the audience so that they can be fully involved with the singer as they sing the song.
Here is my Piano Rendition of Day By Day as I accompany singers
In this video, you see my playing the song "Day By Day" in different varying moods.
How To Create varying moods in a song?
Tips: You must use a variety of piano techniques!
This is the only way to keep the audience from falling asleep.
The audience loves to hear a song with varying moods put in the rendtion.
Piano Techniques in this Rendition of "Day By Day"
It is important that you let your piano techniques FLOW easily from one to another!
00:20 I began with playing nostalgic mood: Adding +2 and +9 color tones on Left Hand
00:40 Moving in tingling soft mood: Right Hand an octave higher
00:50 Right hand moving back down to an octave
00:59 Left Hand Stride technique to vary the mood
01:11 Playing a Right Hand run up to let the music roll in the flow
0:1:15 Right hand playing in full octaves with 4 tone sound
01:23 Creating a fun run to let the music breathe
01:34 Left Hand creating a RHYTHMIC Stride Technique (The audience loves listening to this rhythm, so Iet this rhythm stretch out a bit)
02:08 While the LH keep that rhythmic stride, RH moves up an octave to create CONTRAST
02:42 RH now plays rhythmic chord accompaniment
02:47 RH adds in a SPLASH to play an octave higher
02:54 RH run to create an intermediary break
02:56 LH plays nostalgic +9 while RH tinkles 2 octaves higher for soft music
02:58 New Age airy sound
03:14 Back to stable sound
03:18 LH plays arpeggio octaves accompaniment
03:14 Splashing a run to make the music flow
03:22 Another run right away to bring more excitement into the song
03:28 RH tremolo to excite people's hearts to a higher state of venture
03:32 RH tremolo again but this time in a lower octave to stabilize their emotions
03:37 RH and LH tremolo to create a FUN sound of a wild ride
03:42 RH and LH doing a complete FULL run to prepare them for the ending of the song
03:47 Slow down the music to tell the audience they are returning home
03:55 My Style - I suddenly end the song with an unexpected full sound run to bring them back home from this journey.
0:39 LH - one deep sound! They are happy to hear this because they are now home safely!
Thank you for listening!
I hope you have enjoyed this song as much as I have played it for you.
