I have been posting most weekends using ’s #metalweekend tag, but my main love of music is progressive and alternative music. Some of my posts have included these songs, but I feel they are not keeping with the spirit of metal.
I will continue to post article’s using #metalweekend occasionally but feel I have more to offer regarding these other genre’s that I am more familiar with.

Introducing #alternativeweekend. Post an article that highlights THREE great songs that are either progressive or alternative and use the tag #alternativeweekend.

Genesis – Dodo // Lurker
Is this the hidden gem on a truly awful Genesis album? In 1981 I bought the ‘Abacab’ album on the strength on the fantastic ‘Duke’ and was sorely disappointed. So much that I missed this song. The vinyl long play sat un-played on my shelf for many years before I dumped my whole collection around 1998.
Years later when mp3 files were the standard, I re-listened to the Abacab album. It was still terrible besides the title track and possibly "Me and Sarah Jane", but how had I missed this great song first time around?
Mike Oldfield - Punkadiddle
My introduction to Mike Oldfield came about by accident as most of mine have. I had just started a new job and was in the car of my temporary mentor. He switched on the rustic car audio system which was then cassette based and this song entered my ears.
It must have been the guitar that caught my attention. It’s quite a cheesy tune in parts but has some good electric guitar riffs. From here it was Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn, Incantations; I listened to a lot of his music and was forever an entranced fan.
PJ Harvey – A Perfect Day Elise
I have mixed feelings about Polly Jane, she’s different enough to attract my attention but outside of the singles (none of which have been hits), her music doesn’t really resonate with me.
The singles however are a different story, and as this article has been a little ‘proggy’ today, I need to throw in some alternative to mix it up a bit. At least we a have a proper video to go with this track.
In the spirit of ’s original idea, you need to remember one thing.
Pump up the volume, PLAY IT LOUD!
