This is inspired by the #ShirtOnSunday series by . I have a lot less gig shirts than him.
I have to admit about not being sure about the date, but it was on the Time's Up tour. I had seen their first album Vivid mentioned in a guitar magazine and it was one of the first CDs I bought. The follow up was more experimental, but they were a fine rock band who mixed in some funk and other influences. Guitarist Vernon Reid is a real monster player who can do speed as well as more relaxed grooves. Singer Corey Glover has an amazing range.
I went to the gig on my own and I think I may have struggled to find the venue as I had no satnav back then. The Junction is a fairly basic venue, but good for seeing bands up close. I saw Pocupine Tree there years later. I bought this shirt and I think I put in on then.
I spent a lot of the gig down the front in a bit of a mosh. I was close enough to touch Corey's outstretched hand. I remember he was wearing a Body Glove outfit and I had a view of the setlist in front of him.
I looked on a few sites that log gigs. They do not seem to show this one. Here are other venues plated around then. I was also at the Brixton one with my then girlfriend. That is a much bigger venue and I was nearer the back as she did not want to get crushed.
It is still unusual to see an all black rock band, but these guys were carrying on a tradition going back to Hendrix and other pioneers.
I saw Corey live earlier this year at the Bowie Celebration gig in Berlin. His voice is still on top form.
I have no photos of my own from old gigs. We had no camera phones and actual cameras were generally banned. I found this gig video from around that time.
Rock on!
