A friend of one of my pub musician buddies was playing a gig in Hitchin last night, so I went along to show support. Volks Patent is originally from Germany, but he's lived in the UK for a long time. He was playing at The Angel's Share, which is a little tapas bar run by a sikh gentleman. As well as Indian food they have a huge range of whiskies, but I was not drinking much on this occasion. I'll have to go back some time.
When I arrived Volker (or Volks) was setting up his PA in front of the bar. It's in an arcade of shops, so there's no traffic apart from people walking past into town. There were some electric heaters to keep us a little warmer as it was only about 6C. We had a good chat about music and guitars. Turns out he has also owned a Gordon Smith electric.
In time some more people turned up, including several of my pub friends. He played a couple of sets that must have included around 25 original songs. He's a great player using some nice fingerstyle and a looping pedal. He sings a lot about relationships, which is something I find hard to write songs about.
It was a bit chilly sitting out there, but still enjoyable. I didn't even have gloves with me. An audience applauding with gloves makes a different sound. I hope to hear him play again some time and he even suggested we get together and jam some time.
I didn't record any video and I struggled to find any of him. He seems to operate mostly on Facebook, but I did mention Steemit to him and he seemed interested. There's a clip from a previous gig on Facebook and he's on Soundcloud. I'll see if I can tempt him to Steemit and he can get into the media sharing options we have.
Steem on and rock on!
I'll buy guitar picks for Steem Dollars
