I discovered the band Big Big Train whilst listening to the Prog'opolis prog podcast (long overdue for a show). They played a track called The Underfall Yard that lasts over 20 minutes and is about Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It turned out that a long of their songs are about historical themes. They sing about the industrial revolution, steam trains and early flight, but it's largely about the people.
Initially I thought they sounded like early Genesis, but they really have their own sound. The lineup has varied and currently includes guitars, keyboards, violin and flute. I guess I would categorise them as pastoral prog, with some folk elements.
Their new album is named Grimspound. This odd name comes from an iron age site on Dartmoor. It continues their themes of early pilots, racing cars, scientific explorers and other stories with a historical or mythical background. They mix electric rock sounds with more traditional folk instruments in a delightful way. It's all very melodic and the stories suck you in.
They have put up some performance videos of some of the songs. They are playing some gigs later this year and I'll be at one of those. I missed them a couple of years back as I was away and look forward to the live experience.
This one is a little heavier
I've featured this band a few times before on Steemit, but I hope to reach a few more people this time. Of course I'd love to see the band using Steemit themselves, but I don't have any contacts with them.
