Some of you will know that I did over 100 entries for the old Open Mic contest on Steem, but that ended a while ago and I got out of the habit of recording song videos. I heard about and decided I ought to enter. They have slightly different rules and songs have to be entered on specific days.
Here is my first entry which I wrote recently. I had been feeling I ought to try country as a lot of people I play with like it. It is not really my thing.
Lyrics to Country Song
I'm not Johnny Cash and I don't dress in black
There’s no fringes on my shirt
I got no cowboy boots and I never rode the range
Spitting tobacco in the dirt
I never lost the farm on the turn of a card
I never gamble anyway
But something drove me to write down this song
I guess my muse had something to say
Chorus
I'm trying to write a country song
If I'm not country enough it'll come out wrong
They say country's 3 chords and the truth
But your truth is different to mine
Country songs are about trucks and beer
But I'm a middle class guy from Bedfordshire
The only thing I’ve ridden is a donkey on the beach
To rope a steer is so out of reach
And I never considered myself a fan of country
But we all know some of the songs
But still I find myself singing with a twang
Where did I go wrong?
Chorus
So maybe I should go and move to Nashville
Take my chances at the Grand Old Opry
Get into the country hall of fame
Have people round the world shouting my name
Do a duet with Dolly Parton
Get a suit made with a satin lining
Or should I just make music that sounds good to me?
I’m not one to conform
Chorus x2
