My son was begging me to get to Maker Faire very early, a year after he had missed out on being invited on stage to be locked in the Faraday Cage, and dance with the other kids under the musical tesla coils.
This was going on each year for many years; not sure about 2017..
We managed to get him up to the front on the crowd, and he was invited on stage by Adam Savage (MythBusters) and he had a great time.
It's hard to believe, but this is a musical instrument, and it's controlled with MIDI keyboards. There are 2 Tesla Coils, one on each side of the cage. The coils arc at different frequencies, producing musical tones.
Using a MIDI sequencer, it is possible to automate the play of the coils, using recorded MIDI instructions (player piano style).
The camera has a difficult time capturing just how amazing this show is; they darken the room and it lights up with showers of plasma; just incredible to witness.
