The Orb started life as a DJ duo consisting of Alex Patterson and Jimmy Cauty. The pair would play an eclectic mix of tripped out samples that they gleaned from rare sound effects records with a whole range of different genres of music alongside some of the more relaxed house and techno that was being imported from the US and Europe. They would play this new sound to the clubbers in the chill out room at Paul Oakenfolds' Land Of Oz club night held in London's Heaven nightclub. Initially this room at the back of the club wasnt really that popular but after a few months the pair started to pack the room with upwards of 100 clubbers seeking a little rest and quite time from the frenzied shenanigans in the main room.
This eclectic soundscape would go on to form the foundation to the ambient house sound that both Cauty and Patterson would create in the coming years.
