A recent Reddit post talking about the story behind the urban rock band Spin Doctors' song called "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" made me listen to another of their more famous song, "Two Princes", which spiraled into me digging other 90s songs that I used to immerse myself in.
I may sound bias, but oh boy do the 90's come with some amazing music. Nirvana absolutely defined that decade. Nevertheless, there have been many bands during that era that defined specific chapters of my life.
My final two years of university were spent in the US. One of the first songs that I listened to during my first week in University of Alabama was by Hootie and the Blowfish. Until today, whenever I hear the songs from their album Cracked Rear View, it will almost always take me back to memories of my Bama life.
Urban pop-rock-folk was the in thing during my college years, and even more so in my university. Gin Blossoms was another band that got a lot of radio airplay. "Till I Hear From You" was one of my favourites.
Dave Matthews Band had a dash of eclectic in many of their strings-focused music. "Crash Into Me" was refreshingly new at the time. No wonder their popularity lasted as long as it has.
Getting deeper into the musical eclectics would be the always-groovy funk number called "Virtual Insanity" by Jamiroquai. I seriously can never get tired of listening to this song, nor his voice.
Ultimately, the one artist that defined my junior and senior years in college, was Alanis Morissette. "Ironic" may be her biggest hit song, but her first single out of the album Jagged Little Pill called "You Oughta Know" was THE song that ripped all other songs. Her voice, the lyrics, the raw expression... you don't get that from just any artist.
Every song in Jagged Little Pill was a masterpiece.
Adding to the fact that "You Oughta Know" was inspired by her depression caused by a breakup with the actor who played Uncle Joey in the well-known American TV series "Full House", makes the song that more delicious.

It's comforting to listen back to all my favourite university-era songs and get flashbacks of the scenery, the smell, and the sensation of being back in college and in Alabama. Fond feelings all around, which is well needed as COVID-19 forces us to be stuck indoors.
I hope we get to experience life freely again. Until then, stay safe.
