The Hosers Hooteanny Part 2!
It has been as liberating as it has been strange to get back to enjoying live music after a long 2 years. Imagine how weird/awesome it is to be performing again!
I have teased the tale in recent posts leading up to the show and you can catch the latest chapter here @zekepickleman/what-is-a-hootenanny
3 Years Ago...
...was the last Hootenanny show we played. We made disco great again and there was jubilation. Then, a couple years of no hockey tournaments or big club shows.
After those long hockeyless winters, we were like the Blue Brothers, gettin' the band back together. We had been ruminating a concept that was born before any lockdowns. Working a hockey team into an on-stage act is such a fun challenge but we kinda stacked our deck this year with another guitar player and bass player.
The rehearsals were fun but few when you consider learning the songs and building an entertaining show. Covid knocked a couple of us out of key rehearsals, came close to a few other team mates, and put a questions mark on whether or not our performance would happen. Were other teams experiencing the same thing and would the Hootenanny even happen? Would we be postponed another year?
The boys had done their job and we were off to the finals in the hockey/beerdrinkin' portion of the weekend and we were in good shape on Saturday night. So, it was time to hit the stage and take it up a hole.
Huey Lewises and the Groove!
We had been taken back in time over 30 years and transformed ourselves into a mutated version of the iconic 80s band of similar name https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huey_Lewis_and_the_News
The upgraded rhythm section came together nicely despite only having 2 rehearsals.
We had our own horn section and Smitty was shreddin'.

That left the vocals to a guitar player, bassist and former squash pro.
It was great to get back to listening to, and even getting to perform some live music once again. It seems every step back to more normal stuff is hard-earned and carries that element of risk. Despite our best efforts, we are all healthy and safe and looking back on a rockin' spectacle.
Here is the setlist:
- Heart of Dufferin Groove (Heart of Rock & Roll)
- Power of Love
- If This Is It
- Heart & Soul
- I Wanna New Drug
This has been your backstage pass for a show that might not and possibly should not have happened! May it inspire you to safely yet boldly adventure now because the years don't come back. Go kick some ass and tell 'em Zeke sent ya.
