Within the area of Tzelentzchik, Touapse, Novorossiysk and Sochi in Russia, at the bottom of the Caucasus mountains, there are countless megalithic monuments, referred to as Dolmens by the Russians.
Numerous archaeologists have attempted to determine their purpose, but have been unsuccessful to date. However, some of the theories suggest that they were burial tombs, because some Of the Dolmens contained artefacts and human remains. It must be noted that, not all of them contained remains making it impossible to confirm that they were tombs.
If you had to ask the locals about their origin, they will relay the story of dwarfs that lived there, alongside giants whom built the stone homes for their weaker neighbours to protect them from the bad weather.
Some even believe that they were built with the help of extra-terrestrials, whom also gave them magic powers to heal the sick and solve their love troubles.
Whilst writing this, a thought came to mind about the Dolmens perhaps being used storage purposes, such as for food, wood, tools etc.
Carbon dating reveals that they were built sometime between 4000 and 6000 years ago, with some archaeologists even claiming to have dated them back to 25000 years ago.
The Dolmens are not unique to Russia, and can be found all around the world, however the Dolmens in the Caucasus mountains are unique in their design, which is nothing short of extraordinary!
Almost all of them are square, with a circular hole in the centre of the facade ( there are a few with square holes). Plugs were also found, that fit perfectly in to the round holes. Some of them have an enclosed court in front of them, which was more than likely utilised for some kind of ritual.
The decorations are not very elaborate on the Dolmens, majority of them having engraved zigzags, circles and triangles.
The question that remains, is how these ancient architects managed to measure and fit the stones so precisely together, that not even the blade of a knife can fit between them, this is hardly even achievable with modern advanced technology today.
How is it that the ancient peoples whom were not yet civilized and believed to live in mud huts, had no knowledge of steel and pottery wheels as yet, but somehow managed to construct these advanced Dolmens that are even being admired for their design today.
To this day, we are no closer to understanding who built them, or why, but we know that there are thousands of them everywhere in the world, and that they must have served a very important purpose to the ancient people.
