I was pleasantly surprised when my authorities asked me to assemble a team and conduct a free medical camp for old people at Chathannoor Kakkattu Mana.
The moment I reached the courtyard of the house, I was spellbound by its scenic beauty and serenity.
My job was to examine the senior citizens who had assembled there as part of the 'day care home ' programme (Pakalveedu : 'Pakal' means day, 'Veedu' means home in malayalam)
During the break I visited the pond at the Mana which is constructed in a traditional manner too.
Some of the participants sang songs. This old lady recited some holy verses.
The pakalveedu program which happens twice a week here, is a get together for old people where they can share their joy and sorrows with their peers.
All participants were given free lunch prepared by volunteers who were also organisers of this event. This event is conducted by the local self governing body known as 'Panchayat' with the cooperation of a woman empowerment organisation known as 'Kudumbasree'.
