Every day more and more images of private citizens volunteering and private businesses providing means for the volunteers to help, most of the time coordinating efforts to city governments and local state agents. Many of those volunteers coming from areas severely affected by the Catastrophe.
As for now, more than 450 of the 497 towns/cities of my state/province have been partially or mostly destroyed with the metropolitan area of the capital still under 4 meters of water in the commercial and industrial core of the city(state government buildings are also there).
If my homeland keeps having natural disaster that destructive and that frequent, we might end up developing a collective culture similar to the Japanese where the people put a lot of value in their roles in society rather than valuing their own personal desires. But this is just my opinion. After all, Japanese culture developed this aspect of collectivity as anthropological response to the frequency of natural disasters in their home islands.
