Hi steemians.
Today I am going to tell you about the Greenland's melting ice.
According to a new study which is published in the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances found that Greenland's ice is melting at 7% faster rate than previously thought. Greenland is losing approximately 40 trillion pounds in a year. Instead of losing an average of 550 trillion pounds of ice from 2003 to 2013, Greenland has lost more than 590 trillion pounds.
Melting of ice from Greenland and Antarctica contributes to sea-level rise, which threatens low-lying countries and cities around the world. Greenland's ice sheet is the world's second-largest behind Antarctica. Warmer air and sea temperatures caused by man-made climate change is one of the main reasons the ice is melting.
According to the study co-author Michael Bevis of Ohio State University, the newly correction will help researchers better identify the levels of global sea leve rise, which has averaged about 8 inches over the past century.
The new measurements made on the percentage of ice melting in greenland was made possible due to GRACE Satellites. These are a set of twin crafts that had estimated the ice loss, which was based on the changes in the pull of gravity- all while the satellites orbited around planet earth. Conclusions on the study were made possible, thanks to data taken from a network of GPS sensors.
