My mother in law always said if you hear an owl someone is dying in the family.
She definitely did not know the following facts about owls.
Did you know that some owls can swim, they are not waterproof and their feathers get heavy so they struggle to fly? They then swim to the side of the water and shake the water off them before they can fly again.
Owl, swimming to side of dam.
Not water proof.
Other birds can fly in the rain, as they have oil on their wings but owls do not.
Then the owl female is much bigger than the male, which is why they do not fight over female paring.
The largest owl on record is Cuba's extinct giant owl (Ornimegalonyx)
This is a replica of him modelled at the Natural Museum of History in Cuba.
Then you would think a Giraffe would have more neck vertebra but believe me an owl has 14 double the amount of humans or Giraffe’s and they can turn their necks 270 degrees. Something very few animals can do. Here is a photo of an Owl turning his neck.
There is much about owls I would like to tell you but will make it part 2.Tomorrow.
