Hi gang. Tonight's Daily Nature Fix is about eagles. Eagles that suffer from male pattern baldness. Just kidding. Bald eagles aren't literally bald (obviously). Interestingly, I just learned why they are called "bald" eagles though. I always thought it was because their head is white and their body is brown, so it looks like brown feathers were missing. That's not so. The name actually comes from the word "piebald" with refers color patterns in animals; usually black and white. Anyway, lets have a look at some of the photos from last month:
^^^This first eagle was perched on some kind of communications tower that was sticking out of the water near a small harbor in Juneau.
^^^And this is a tighter shot of the same bird. It's also the closest photo of the birds I was able to get on this trip.
^^^This was actually the very first eagle we saw on this trip. It was flying high above us and I almost didn't even see it until Kylene pointed it out to me. The mountains at the bottom of the photo are the ones that cradle the Mendenhall Glacier.
^^^This last one was hanging out along the shores of Auke Bay. It was also searching around for some fish, I assume. It sure looked nice in front of that evergreen backdrop.
