Markings : Black mask, wings and tail; grey above, white below; hooked bill.
Habitat : Thornbushes, as in orchards and old pastures; barbed-wire fences
Seasons : All year in South; spring, summer, fall elsewhere.
Range : Breeds from Canada to Florida and Gulf of Mexico, but rare and local over much of Northeast; winters from c. U.S. southwards; north along coast to Virginia.
Note : Carnivorous, feeds on insects, more rarely on mice and small birds, all of which are caught and impaled on thorns and barbed wire.
