I see turtles all over the place due to the large numbers of bodies of water in this area and lots of rain. Softshell turtles are a bit more rare to sight on dry land due to their natures of being entirely aquatic. Softshells emerge from the water only to bask in the sun or to lay their eggs.
Many people like to catch and eat them, in some areas they are considered a delicacy. No comment on that..
They prefer the still waters of ponds, streams, lakes, and swamps. All softshells are very fast-moving in water and on land. This particular species is carnivorous and eats small fish, insects, crawfish, and snails. I was excited to snap its photograph!
