Protecting Koalas
In a world first, Gold Coast rate payers, of which I am one, will pay a small annual levy to protect koala habitat and fund research programs.
There has been a lot of conjecture about this from local citizens who argue that this is not a responsibility of rate payers. The price of $3 per year is not very much to have to contribute towards this worthwhile cause. As humans continue to impact and invade more and more koala habitat, it is imperative that we do whatever we can to protect forest, particularly in urban areas.
Nothing beats the sound of a grunting koala male on the hunt for a female. This sound echoes through out the forest during mating season and koalas can sometimes be spotted moving across the ground to get to other forested areas.
The koala is synonymous with the Australian identity around the world, and it is in our best interest to protect them and their habitat the best we can.
