In ancient times, the Devas (celestial beings) and Asuras (demons) were constantly at war. The Devas, led by Indra, sought a way to overcome the Asuras' growing power. They approached Lord Brahma, the creator, for guidance.
Brahma revealed that the nine planets (Navagrahas) governed the fate of all beings—both divine and mortal. To ensure balance in the universe, he assigned each Graha a specific role in influencing life on Earth.
1. Suryan (Sun – Ravi)
Suryan, the king of the Navagrahas, was born to Sage Kashyapa and Aditi. He rides a chariot driven by seven horses, symbolizing the seven days of the week. Worshipping him brings health, vitality, and success.
2. Chandran (Moon – Soma)
Chandran, the gentle deity, emerged during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). Married to the 27 Nakshatras (stars), he waxes and wanes, affecting human emotions. Devotees pray to him for mental peace and prosperity.
3. Chevvai (Mars – Mangal)
Chevvai, the fierce warrior, was born when Lord Shiva’s sweat fell on Earth. He governs courage and strength but can also cause conflicts. Worshiping him reduces anger and grants victory.
4. Budhan (Mercury – Budha)
Budhan, the wisest Graha, is the son of Chandran and Tara. He governs intelligence, communication, and business. Those seeking knowledge and sharp minds pray to him.
5. Guru (Jupiter – Brihaspati)
Guru, the teacher of the Devas, represents wisdom and prosperity. He blesses devotees with knowledge, wealth, and good fortune.
6. Sukran (Venus – Shukra)
Sukran, the guru of the Asuras, is a master of diplomacy and luxury. Though he favors material pleasures, worshipping him brings harmony in relationships and artistic talents.
7. Shani (Saturn – Sani)
Shani, the son of Suryan and Chhaya, is the strict judge of karma. His slow movement brings long-lasting effects—both rewards and punishments based on deeds. Devotees light lamps to pacify his harsh influence.
8. Rahu (North Lunar Node)
Rahu was an Asura who disguised himself as a Deva to drink Amrit (nectar of immortality). When caught, Lord Vishnu beheaded him, but his head remained immortal. Rahu causes sudden obstacles, but worshiping him reduces his malefic effects.
9. Ketu (South Lunar Node)
Ketu is Rahu’s headless body. He governs spirituality, detachment, and hidden knowledge. Though his influence can bring confusion, sincere devotion transforms it into enlightenment.
The Power of Navagraha Worship
To balance the effects of the planets, the Devas established Navagraha temples where devotees could offer prayers, light lamps, and chant mantras. Even today, people visit these sacred shrines to seek blessings and overcome planetary afflictions.
