ecoDesigns Weekly Meeting Report
Yesterday Tuesday 11th August 2020, Mr. Green and the trainees of ecoDesigns held their weekly meeting at 04:00PM in the absence of their training directors, Mrs Akisah Justine and Miss Nchang Notburga who were on other assignments.
The meeting began with a word of prayer from Rahimatou who called on Allah’s wisdom, guidance and protection of the entire team and then a word of welcome from Mr. Green, Founder/Executive Director of The Greens.
In his welcome address, Mr. Green called on all trainees to be wise in the management of ecodesigns resources, be vigilant with the little children who are always at ecoDesigns so as to avoid accidents and to maintain top notch hygiene and sanitation standards at ecoDesigns.
Prior to the meeting, we had an unfortunate incident wherein one of the ecoDesigns trainee’s son was hit by a car as he was crossing the road just in front of the office. Fortunately for us, he only sustained light injuries and was discharged from the hospital a few minutes after the incident. The good news is that our hub is just opposite a hospital. After the son was discharged from the hospital, the trainee joined us for the meeting. This explains why Mr. Green emphasized on all trainees, especially trainees who come to work with their kids to be cautious with sharp objects so as to avoid accidents.
The following trainees were present for the meeting;
- Moradatou Bongsiysi
- Banboyeh Blessing
- Tita Sandrine
- Confidence Wandu
- Rahimatou Wiybinyuy
- Dzeyewir Suife Delphine
Two trainees (Lobte Portia and Kelly) were absent.
Mr. Green’s welcome word was followed by a presentation of weekly report activities by all the trainees of ecoDesigns.
Every week, each trainee besides learning fashion designing and textile recycling is tasked to;
- Join textile off-cuts to form a 1.5m long textile upcycled fabric
- Design, cut and sew one textile upcycled garment from the textile upcycled fabric
- Chop the smaller textile off-cuts into smaller pieces to be used for pillow production
- Draw a unique textile design and cost so that management can provide funds for its production
Below are pictures of the trainees with samples of their work.

At the end of the presentation, the trainees we all appreciated for their creativity, hard work and commitment to becoming ecoFashion designers. The team then discussed other matters that can enhance effectiveness and efficiency of the hub with hygiene and sanitation being the most pressing issue. About ecoDesigns
@ecoDesigns is ' textile recycling and fashion designing hub that is training women and girls for FREE in Textile Recycling and Fashion Designing in a bid to reduce female unemployment, inequalities and poverty, promote female entrepreneurship, combat textile waste pollution and climate change as well as improve the health and wellbeing of orphans, prisoners, underprivileged and poor people via the donation of free clothes and shoes the hub is collecting from the city.
ecoDesigns was created after our 2017 research that involved over 400 Tailors/Fashion designersin the city of Bamenda, North West Region, Cameroon, were we realized that;
- They are more than 800 Tailors and Fashion designers in the city, with each tailor generating an average of 2 – 5kg of textile waste per week and more during festive periods. We realized from this research that the tailoring/fashion industry in Bamenda generates about 1600kg to 4000kg of textile waste every week.
- More than 75% of the tailors/fashion designers burn or throw their textile waste in the landfill and that many of them were unaware of the environmental impact of the textile waste and the textile industry as a whole.
On the other hand, in an oral interview with more than 100 persons from diverse households in the city, we realized that more than 80% of the people burn or throw their old/unwanted or damaged clothes and that not up to 5% of them knew the environmental impact of the textile industry as a whole.
Its against these research backdrops that ecoDesigns was created. The hub currently has 02 Training Directors and 07 women and girls who are learning textile recycling and fashion designing for free.
The two years old hub has graduated two ecoFashion Designers, collected and upcycled over 12,000 pounds of textile waste into reusable pads, pillows, chalkboard erasers, garments, dolls, mattresses, Laptop bags, scarecrows, etc.
The hub has also collected over 2000 dresses from the city of Bamenda and redistributed to over 300 persons who are internally displaced, orphans, underprivileged, etc.
