I get frustrated very easily at a majority of series that are on Netflix (or perhaps anywhere) for how dreadfully slow moving the pace of the overall story is. Black Spot (Zone Blanche) is the most recent offender of this irritating trend in the crime / thriller genre.
The first episode starts out thrilling enough as we are given a bit of a glimpse into how creepy the sleepy town of Villefranche (a fictional place, I checked... it's not real) is. It is an isolated community with a small populations of people, some of which also seem quite creepy.
The show focuses primarily on these three, two of which are members of the county police force and the other one is a professor who has come to Villefranche to investigate a recent apparent murder and to also try to spearhead why it is that the murder rate is so high in this small community.
There are certain scenes that happen right near the start that are actually really captivating and lead us to believe that the show is going to proceed in an interesting and captivating yet creepy manor. However, after the first 8 minutes or so almost nothing happens at all in the rest of the episode until the final 30 seconds or so. It doesn't even do very much in the way of character development and perhaps I find this slow pace even more annoying because i do not speak French and therefore must read the entire time.
Apparently there are some spooky supernatural things that eventually happen but I don't know if I have it in me to endure the excruciatingly slow progress to get to that point.
On another note this trailer makes the show look worse than it is because it is overdubbed in English.... which is just horrible the same as pretty much any other film that is overdubbed.
I am only watching this show because i made a silly deal with myself that I would watch anything that Netflix presents to me on my start page. I had high hopes for this one because I do enjoy supernatural crime thriller type stuff. However, I really think I lack the patience necessary to make it through an entire season of this since merely the entire first hour (of ten) was so exceptionally boring.
Perhaps it gets better as you become more invested in the characters but I think this is another one of those series that is 10 hours long when it really should have been 3.
