Seems like Kevin Hart has a ton of stuff on Netflix and I would imagine that he is quite well-compensated for this. Rather than just have another comedy stand-up special, he came up with this and while it really isn't all that funny, it did accomplish the goal of showcasing the lesser known people of black history.
The show starts out with his daughter (not actually his daughter, it is young actress Saniyya Sidney) having a bit of a fit because the movie 12 Years a Slave made her angry. Kevin intervenes to try to use this opportunity to teach her a bit about black history. However, rather than focus on the already very well known heroes like Harriet Tubman and Fredrick Douglas (which he also talks about, but very briefly) he talks about men and women that for the most part, don't appear in most history books.
The show doesn't just focus on the times of slavery, he tells a few stories about that and then fast forwards to more modern times to speak of Robert Johnson's impact on rock and roll (ask any of the "legends" if Johnson was incredible or not) and also Mae Jemison, a doctor who became an astronaut because she "refused to take no for an answer.
There are many more. I hate to admit that even though I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent that I had not heard of a vast majority of these people - and there is the reason for the special to exist I suppose!
For those expecting a laugh-your-ass-off comedy experience that is typical of Kevin Hart, you will be disappointed because there isn't a tremendous amount of that in this special. It is however a bit refreshing to see him be involved in something that ends up being a bit educational as well. I liked it, but to be honest I didn't laugh very much.
