I am a non-subtitle watcher of shows and movies, I prefer watching movies with no words on the screen. To start, there was a post on Facebook that caught my attention. it was a post aimed at people who do not want to watch movies with subtitles on.
I suddenly thought about my brother who always watches TV shows or movies with subtitles on (Mainly Netflix). He would often tell me things like how I can't read fast or I can't read at all. So here's my point of view with this claim.
I like watching movies/shows in a dark environment so I often turn off the lights when I watch them. So how it looks to me watching a show that's dim but has white subtitles that shines as bright as the sun is just as blinding as watching the sun directly in the middle of the afternoon.
I think reading words distracts the viewer from the visual cinematics of movies. There are some great scenes of movies that often don't get as much admiration from the viewers at the moment it is shown in the scene, because they were too busy with the subtitles and as a result of missing it out, they are now compelled to rewind the scene because they "missed it". No you did not "miss it" you just chose to ignore it because you were too busy reading.
Some subtitles are completely unnecessary and are just there to annoy the hell out of me. example the subtitles that put "loud noises from the basement" what'd they expect me to say "wow thanks subtitles I never would have guessed that the sound was coming from the basement the moment the protagonist turned her head towards the basement door because a loud noise caught her attention. keep up the fine work." like can you get more specific than that? there are also some subtitles that put too much spoilers on characters that are emerging from the shadows that ruin the entire point of them emerging out from the shadows for. Yeah no shit it wasn't Madara, I knew all along that he was not dead but I'm just a genius at character plots. At least don't put his whole name in a bracket or in bold characters and expect me to be surprised.
It is very unnecessary to put subtitles on when you can speak the language. For the people who say "What can't you read?". big bruuhh moment, is it really that hard for you to listen? do you have a hearing deficiency? can't you read their lips? I can understand using subtitles for watching anime or any other non-english shows out there, but I mean come on, lets get real here, English is like a universal language.
This post was not made to offend pro-subtitlist but merely to explain my frustration or experience living with one and how I believe Shows/Movies should be watched not read. No, I do not think no subtitles are better than subtitles, I just prefer it that way because it's my PREFERENCE. but really if you enjoy watching with subtitles than have fun, I respect your decision, so respect mine when I don't want to watch it with subtitles on. Everyone has their own drug so it's best to leave them to their own devices.
