The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) says it will put cryptocurrency on the top of its priority this year.
While making some comments on cryptocurrencies, the chinese central bank vice governor Fan Yifei announced that cryptocurrency will be its top agenda for the coming year, an effort by the bank to protect the Yuan currency.
Fan Yifei highlighted that one of the three priorities for 2018 will be to ensure the integrity of the Chinese currency, while he encouraged the central bank’s ongoing research on the development of a national digital currency.
Fan noted that the agency will put in new regulatory measures to crackdown on digital currencies internally and with external parties to “rectify different kinds of cryptocurrencies”.
No further comments or details on the matter have been made so far. while China has launched several crackdowns on cryptocurrencies for some time, the recent remarks of the PBoC deputy governor indicates a major purge of cryptocurrency in China this year.
Earlier this month, reports indicated that the Public Information Network Security Supervision agency under the Ministry of Public Security was extending the scope of its Internet surveillance to foreign cryptocurrency exchanges providing services to domestic investors.
