I grew up in a pretty bad area of New Jersey.
We had a ritual of putting 'the bars' across the doors and windows each night before bed.
Even still the bad guys would find a way to get into the house (while we were upstairs sleeping) and take our shit.
My dad had a hand gun of some sort or another. I know nothing about guns now or then but I knew he had it.
and so... we decided to get a watch dog.
Dad came home with a monster yet so cute puppy German Shepard.
We name him Echo and so the story goes.
He scared robbers out of our yard.

and completely off our block once chasing them down the sidewalk! A truly awesome sight!
Eventually we got forced out of the neighborhood and moved to the boonies.
Echo loved it. Plenty of room to run and bark etc
One day not too long after moving my mom invited a guy over for dinner from work.
He was a little rough around the edges as mom worked as a social worker for homeless and drug/alcohol addicts.
After dinner that night we decided to go say hi to the dog and get some fresh air.
Bad idea.
Echo went nuts. Broke the chain connected to his collar and attacked this poor guy.
Bit him on the forearm, fracturing it to pieces
Was it the dog's fault? Was it my dad's or mine?
Really sucked cause our dinner guest was not happy.
After the emergency room he wanted the dog put down.
This was the same dog that I would sleep in his dog house with. No way we were putting him down.
So... here's what made me remember Echo's story.
Sometimes we get so beat up from our past that it's impossible for us to ever trust anyone outside of our comfort zone again.
It's important however to remember that not everyone is a crook.
Not everyone out there is trying to get into our kitchen window to make off with the TV set.
