On June 11, 2025, a group of children went out to play on the sands of Englewood Beach in Florida, near the Gulf View residential complex. While playing, they came across a strange metallic object covered in hundreds of marine crustaceans. They thought it was an abandoned diving tank, took pictures of it, and even touched it unaware of its true nature.
Two days later, on June 13, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office shed light on the incident, confirming that the object was actually a World War II-era practice bomb, dating back nearly 80 years. It was described as a training bomb weighing around 100 pounds (approximately 45 kilograms), typically used for non-explosive training purposes.
The area was immediately cordoned off with a 30-meter perimeter. Bomb squads from both the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and MacDill Air Force Base were dispatched to assess the situation. After conducting an X-ray scan, they confirmed that the bomb was inactive and contained no explosive material. It was safely removed and transported to the base.
This mysterious discovery reminded the local community of the unexpected surprises the sea can bring. As one Englewood resident watching the operation put it:
"You never know what the ocean might wash up... One day the beach becomes a display of buried history."
