BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:00 P.M.) - The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has fully secured the Damascus-Amman Highway after taking control of several towns from the rebel forces.
According to a field report, the Syrian Arab Army has finally taken control of the towns located north of the Nassib Crossing.
The towns named in the military's field report were Umm Mayathan, Al-Taybah, and Nassib.
The Syrian Arab Army was involved in a fierce battle for several days for the town of Al-Taybah; however, they were repeatedly repelled by the Free Syrian Army's Southern Front Brigades.
A source told Al-Masdar News this evening that the Syrian Arab Army's engineering units have entered the area and begun dismantling mines and IEDs that were left behind by the retreating rebels.
Once the area is cleared of all explosives, the Syrian government will begin removing the trenches and barricades around the Damascus-Amman Highway for the first time in several years.
The Syrian government will be conducting several construction projects between the towns of Khirbat Ghazaleh and Nassib, as these areas were primarily under the control of the rebel forces in southern Syria.
Restoring this highway is going to be an important step towards economic rapprochement between the governments in Damascus and Amman.
