BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:20 P.M.) - The leader of the Lebanese Forces Party Samir Geage stated on Tuesday that the primary issue blocking the formation of the Lebanese government is the constant attempts by Hezbollah and the Free Patriotic Movement to assert their authority over the others.
“The core of the problem that we are currently witnessing is that one of the parties wants to practice authority which exceeds that allowed to it by the constitution, whereas other parties are trying to exploit the authority granted to them by the constitution, albeit indirectly, in order to achieve more gains,” Geagea said at a Lebanese Forces dinner, as quoted by Naharnet.
“I don’t understand why those in charge of signing (the cabinet formation decree) -- President Michel Aoun and Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri -- do not take the initiative of finalizing things, seeing as we can’t put the country and the fate of the economy and the Lebanese pound in peril for any reason,” he continued.
“Let them send the formation decree to Parliament, where any opposing party can confront it and seek to oust the government there,” he would add.
Geagea has been a long time critic of Hezbollah, often calling for their immediate disarmament. If you can't view videos or other embedded visuals, click the link below!
