BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:00 P.M.) - The leader of the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP), Walid Jumblatt, refused to meet members of his political group from Syria this week.
Jumblatt explained via Twitter that he will not meet with any Syrian political group that is in the same camp as President Bashar Al-Assad.
"If geopolitics governs the Lebanese-Syrian relationship, our position from the regime will not change. Therefore, I refuse that the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) and the Democratic Gathering visit Syria, in contrary to what was published in al-Akhbar newspaper," Former MP Walid Jumblatt tweeted.
Jumblatt has been one of the biggest Lebanese opponents to normalization with Syria, often criticizing the government of President Assad.
Prior to this statement, Jumblatt said the Syrian government was responsible for the deaths of several Druze civilians in the Al-Sweda Governorate, despite the Islamic State (ISIS) claiming the terrorist act.
