Because they’ve been giving away trolley-loads of vegetables that weren’t sold in the run-up to Christmas – entirely for free. Shoppers outside the supermarket were encouraged to help themselves to bags of carrots, broccoli, sprouts and parsnips in trolleys with signs on them saying ‘free’. Residents in the area and the homeless were also invited to pick out whatever they wanted.
It is too easy for large companies just to throw this food and not think of the wider consequences, especially with so many people visiting food banks.’
