China and Russia...
Aside from being huge countries in the East, what else do they have in common? A military and personal alliance. This year, marks "the 70 years of diplomatic relations between Moscow and Beijing." Not only that, but President Xi is currently in Moscow meeting with President Putin. According to this article, President Xi stated:
'In the past six years, we have met nearly 30 times. Russia is the country that I have visited the most times, and President Putin is my best friend and colleague.'
Another thing they share in common right now is the growing tensions and distaste for Europe, and especially the United States. An article from the BBC stated:
The alliance between the two countries has intensified since both Moscow and Beijing feel alienated by Europe and especially the US.
Moscow's relationship with the West turned sour when Russia was put under sanctions for its involvement in the Ukraine conflict five years ago. It has also been criticised for assisting the Assad regime in Syria in 2015.
China's ties with the US have deteriorated since the Trump administration appeared to turn its back on globalisation in favour of economic national protectionism.
The two countries are currently embroiled in a trade war and tit-for-tat tariffs that intensive talks have so far failed to resolve.
According to Newstimes:
But most importantly, they find themselves increasingly at odds with the United States. Russia and China are simultaneously mired in economic conflicts with America. Moscow is facing down a barrage of sanctions from Washington, while Beijing is in the midst of an economically damaging trade war.
'If America assumes that Russia and China are a threat and decides to confront the two countries at the same time, then a temporary alliance between them becomes inevitable,' Bruno Maçães, a Beijing-based analyst and author, wrote for the Moscow Times.
Now that Russia and China are "Best Friends" and their economic and militaristic strategies are aligned, all they need is for someone to provoke them and they could strike with force and numbers. Newstimes ends their piece by stating, "rather than rallying its allies, the Trump administration risks alienating them or, at worst, turning them into foes. At the same time, its foes are realizing that the enemy of their enemy might as well be their friend."
