This was the news story I woke up to today.
So the story is a couple days old, but the foot washed ashore 15 miles up the road from my house. However, here’s the kicker 😂🤣, apparently this is COMMON throughout the Salish Sea!!! (Salish Sea = Coastal waterway spanning from southwest British Columbia, Canada to northwest Washington, USA).
COMMON?!!!
In the past decade, over TWENTY feet have floated ashore along the coast! Of these floaters, two matched pairs came ashore and two other feet were matched to their owners via DNA testing. One set of matching feet came ashore 5 months and 22 miles apart! Another identified foot found in 2012 belonged to a man who disappeared in 1987! Under the right conditions it can take up to 30 years for a body to decompose under water.
Ewwwww 🤢
So what do these feet have in common?
The feet have all been discovered inside boots or sneakers. During decomposition it is natural for the feet to become detached from the rest of the body. However, the shoes add extra buoyancy allowing the feet to bob about the ocean before eventually washing to shore.
But who is losing all of these feet?
Two owners of the identified feet met their demise via suicide. Another belonged to a fisherman lost at sea. So far none of the feet appear to have come from murder victims. Most feet are assumed to belong to drowning or suicide victims, with the high number coming to shore attributed to the area’s population and the west to east flow of the area’s currents.
Here’s hoping authorities dive in feet first to identify the soul who lost this foot.
