News reports are alleging that over 100 inmates at a St. Louis jail have set a fire at the venue, and a faulty lock system might be to blame for the incident that recently took place.
They effectively took over a portion of the jail which made headlines, various reports suggested that mayhem erupted at the jail soon after they escaped their cells.
But advocacy groups like the ACLU and others are now wanting access to the City Justice Center because they want to keep a close eye on how the situation is being handled. They want to document the treatment of those inmates after the fire.
In a letter to the city they reportedly mention that inmates and their lawyers have painted a very different picture from what the city has said about the incident that took place. Various reports allege that inmates have been causing mayhem and property destruction at this facility for weeks.
Some activists have suggested that the mayhem was a result of inhumane conditions at the jail for inmates.
“They are demanding proper heat, they want proper (personal protective equipment), proper clothing and visits from families, who can visit them from the other side of the glass,... This was an act of courage that was staged to reinforce these issues because their needs are still not being met.” - EXPO (Ex-Incarcerated People Organizing) St. Louis member
From outbreaks of COVID-19 to issues with treatment for injuries, to heating, and clothing etc, a variety of allegations have been made as to why they might have engaged in the riot at the facility.
Advocacy groups like the ACLU want to get a tour of the place now to confirm some of these allegations that have been made about the conditions. They also want to see verification that the inmates are having their food, water, clothing needs met etc. St. Louis officials have already rejected the claims of any mistreatment.
The city hasn't been welcoming to the requests to investigate the facility from the ACLU and others, and you've go to wonder what they might be hiding?
Open up the doors, because if everything is as it should be, why not confirm that to put these lies to rest? Let's see some transparency and what tax dollars are paying for.
