Payyannur: As Kerala is battling the worst floods in its history, Swaha, a Plus One student at Shenoy Memorial school in Payyanur, who witnessed the sufferings of the people, took a decision to do something for them.
She decided to donate the one-acre land, gifted by her father to her and her younger brother, to the Chief Minister's distress relief fund.
In the letter written to the Chief Minister, Swaha wrote "I would like to make a small donation to the Chief Minister's distress relief fund. We are donating the one-acre land gifted by our father to us, to the Chief Minister's distress relief fund.”
As the news soon spread on social media, many people heaped praise about the humanity of the girl at a time when violent incidents occur even for a small piece of land.
Swaha is the daughter of Sankaran, a farmer at Kandankali in Payyanur and Vidhubala. Her younger brother is Bhrama.
Sankaran has fully supported his daughter's decision.
The traditional land of the family at Mathil on the Cherupuzha route in Payyanur, now fetches a price of Rs 50 lakh in the market.
"When so many people are suffering, shoudn't we do something?", ask Swaha and Bhrama.
When the whole state is discussing about their donation, and when praises are heaped on them, these children have not put on airs.
Their father Sankaran's stand is that if his children have such a wish, let them do it.
Sankaran, who was a Sanskrit Vidwan, taught Swaha and Bhrama till ninth standard. Later, they joined Shenoy Memorial school. Swaha has secured A plus in all subjects in tenth standard.
The letter jointly written by Swaha and Bhrama to the Chief Minister has gone viral on social media.
Meanwhile Kannur district collector Mir Muhammad Ali told Mathrubhumi News that the technical glitches standing in the way of the government acquiring the land will be removed.
Presently, the authorities are thinking of rehabilitating the people who have lost their houses and land in the landslides, to this land. Due to court related matters, taxes were not accepted for this plot from 1993 onwards. The village officer said that all the issues will be solved as soon as possible and the measures related to the acquisition of land will be initiated
