That title sounds like something from a horror story or a messed up video game. I just read a report in the National Post and then another in The Daily Telegraph that confirms it.
I thought maybe some of my followers may find this interesting aswell so I thought I'd share it today..
The wild boars are tainted by rummaging through the ground around the town of Sarnsjo, the soil there has extremely high levels of caesium 137 that has blown in from the Chernobyl disaster 31 years ago.
According to Swedish scientists the top of the earth has far lower levers of radioactive caesium but the deadly element is preserved deeper down in the soil, at the prime level that these animals forrage for food.
Boars are more affected than other animals due to their eating habits. The animals dig through the soil with their snouts in the search for food.
Farmers in Sweden are concerned hunters may not want to shoot the animals now and their numbers could swell. Currently they already face problems from the packs of beasts ravaging forests and farmlands.
Some of the beasts killed and tested have registered 10 times the level of radiation that is safe for human handling. One specimen actually registered the highest levels of contamination ever recorded.
According to tracking data the boars are moving north toward more populated areas which could lead them into contact with far more humans than they have in the past.
I'll definately try to keep updated on this as I find the story quite fascinating..and scary! 😨
