A city in East China's Shandong Province has been the center of public attention since the city plans to decide to stop water supplies to 3.8 million 11-hour residents on March 22, in an effort to raise public awareness about water conservation on World Water Day.
The Beizhou City Water Resources Bureau decides that three water supply companies in the city will stop supplying live water in urban areas from 9:30 am to 8:30 pm. on March 22, excluding factories, hospitals and schools
Since the Binzhou Water Resource Bureau issued its decree on March 19, the news has generated mixed reactions from local residents and a heated discussion on Chinese social networks.
The supporters say that action will increase awareness of water conservation and affect them to avoid wasting water in the future. Opponents argue that an 11 hour outage will be a residents inconvenience.
This is the second time the city has limited citizens to use water. According to the staff of the Binzhou Water Resources Bureau, it is an act of saving water supplies for the future, the needs of the citizens as well, but because "no one feels uncomfortable, because the pressure to reduce the impact is not great, so the bureau decided to increase activities this year" .
In many cities, the "monthly charging water fill method" improves supply and demand relationships and encourages water conservation.
