Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister of India and DMK Party President M Karunanidhi died on Tuesday evening at a private hospital in Chennai. He was 94 years old.
Karunanidhi took the last breath Tuesday at 6.10 pm He was admitted to The Kaveri Hospital after the night of July 28, when his condition deteriorated. Karunanidhi was battling fever and infection before being admitted to the hospital.
Karunanidhi was struggling with his health problems since October 2016. He was admitted to the hospital in the month of 2016. Then they had an infection in the throat and lungs.
Through this tragic news, the wave of grief has spread throughout Tamil Nadu. Outside the hospital, people are crying in the grief of their beloved leader.
Karunanidhi remained active in politics for nearly eight decades. He is the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu five times. He contested the Assembly elections 13 times and won each time.
Karunanidhi was born on June 3, 1924 in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. His father's name was Muthuvel and mother's name was Anjukam.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his grief at the passing away of Karunanidhi. PM said that Karunanidhi was the most senior leader of India. Modi said in his tweet, "We have lost a leader connected to the land. He was a great writer and his whole life was devoted to the welfare of the poor. "
Karunanidhi was seriously ill for some days and was being treated only in his Chennai-based house.
They were admitted to Kaveri Hospital in Chennai on Friday. He was kept in the ICU of the hospital.
Karunanidhi was not active in politics for the past two years. His son and political heir MK Stalin took over as the DMK executive president in 2017.
After the demise of DMK founder CN Annadurai in 1969, Karunanidhi became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the first time.
He worked as a scriptwriter and dialogue writer in nearly 50 Tamil films.
Karunanidhi took charge of the DMK president on July 27, 1969. On Friday, he completed 49 years in this post and started the 50th year's tenure as chairman.
Karunanidhi did three marriages His first wife, Padmavati, passed away at an early age. This marriage has one son MK Muthu.
After this, Karunanidhi married Dayalu Ammal and Rajati Ammal.
Kindly and Karunanidhi's children are MK Alagiri, MK Stalin, MK Tamil Nadu and daughter Selvi.
His only daughter, Kanimozhi, is Rajya Sabha MP from third marriage.
Karunanidhi also wrote several books Among them, his autobiography Nanjukku Policy (Insight for the Heart) is also included. He is also the editor of party mouthpiece for some time.
Karunanidhi won the last assembly election from Thiruvarur assembly seat. In the 2016 election, he had won the highest victory in the entire state.
After staying away from active politics, Karunanidhi's house was almost closed. On June 3, 2018, when he was 94, he had come to the public for the last time.
