The crocodile macaques of Zhongjong and Huahua got their names from the Chinese word Zhonghua, which denotes the Chinese people, as a sign of the national importance of this event. This is not the first case of cloning of monkeys, but previously a method was applied in which already the fertilized embryo was divided into several parts, which led to the birth of several genetically identical monkeys, identical to identical twins.
In 1996, the sheep Dolly was cloned by transferring genetic information from the somatic (non-sexual) cell to the egg cell. After this, the scientists cloned mice, pigs, cows, dogs and other animals in the same way, but the experiment with primates failed. When in 2003 in the University of Pittsburgh, scientists could not create a single clone of 716 eggs, it was suggested that for primates this method is not at all suitable.
