The Chinese government has demanded the removal of more than 5,000 monks and nuns from Larung Gar Buddhist Academy, and plans to demolish 50 percent of residences at the historic monastery.
According to Free Tibet, some residences have already been destroyed, and the government has threatened to demolish the entire monastery if Larung Gar’s religious authorities don’t comply with the demands.

My opinion on this: The Chinese government is a tyranny. Their demands are ridiculous and these officials' cavalier refusal to give a real reason for this order is especially disgusting. Human Rights Watch says this may stem from concerns about overpopulation and risk of fire in the area, but given the regime's attitude toward its own people's living conditions and basic freedoms, I find this hard to believe. I hope residents of the monastery will peacefully defy the order, as one student at Larung Gar suggested.
