As I informed you here on my blog last week, there just was a hotly anticipated and very closely watched presidential election in my country and I´m excited to tell you who our new President is. Why excited? Well, because it´s the candidate that I and a vast majority of my friends and family members supported in the election and we are thus happy that he won.
Ladies and gentlemen, meet Petr Pavel and his wife Eva. (Some people say he looks like Tom Cruise´s dad and I can see that a bit too :D)

You may wonder why I´m so happy that this man won the election. The are actually two simple reasons for that. First, it means that our old President, Milos Zeman, is finally going to leave the Castle (the Prague Castle is the official seat of the Czech President). Zeman was a horrible President who embarrassed the Czech Republic countless times. He was extremely egoistic, rude, vindictive and also very often drunk. Yes, drunk! This is a photo of him, you might have seen him somewhere on the internet, he was often featured in memes for, well, obvious reasons :D

The second reason why we are so glad that Petr Pavel won the election is because the other candidate who made it to the second (and final) round of the election was actually a corrupt oligarch, populist billionaire, convicted fraudster and former communist secret police agent Andrej Babis. That´s him.

Although the facts about Babis that I just mentioned are well known in my country, there are still many people who support him (Babis actually was our Prime Minister until recently) as they seem to trust and like his populist policy so it was not so sure whether Pavel would manage to beat him but the closer the second round was, the more optimistic we were as you could literally feel how the dynamics in the society was changing with more and more people joining Pavel´s side. I mean he is not perfect of course. There are things about Pavel that some people don´t like and he was not the perfect candidate for me either but definitely much better option than Babis so yeah, we are happy with the result :) Btw before running for the Presidency, Pavel was the chairman of NATO Military Comittee.
Talking about Czech Presidents, I should also mention the other two that I remember. Before Milos Zeman, our President was Vaclav Klaus.

In my opinion, Klaus was a bit better President than Zeman but still kind of meh. And before Vaclav Klaus, we had a President that was extremely popular not only in our country but also in the world. Vaclav Havel.

Vaclav Havel was also the first Czech (then still Czechoslovakian actually) President after the infamous communist era. He died in 2011 but many people in my country still consider him the best President that we ever had.
Czech / Česky:
Česky alespoň pár řádek ke včerejší volbě nového prezidenta. Pokud jsem správně registroval, tak jsme v #cesky žádného Babišovce neměli, takže předpokládám, že s výsledkem druhého kola jsme asi všichni spokojeni. Někdo více, někdo méně, ale asi pro všechny z nás tady byl Pavel lepší volbou než Babiš.
Mě osobně potěšil i fakt, že ačkoliv je jinak Moravskoslezský kraj doslova baštou Babiše a jeho hnutí, tak "moje" Opava šla opět proti proudu a vyhrál tam Pavel :)
No, uvidíme, jak mu to půjde. Jak řekl Zdeněk Svěrák, když se po Zemanovi na hradě pořádně vyvětrá, tak to může být zase brzy důstojné a reprezentativní místo. Snad se tak opravdu stane.
Na závěr ještě nesmím zapomenout vyhlásit a odměnit vítěze své speciální volební tipovačky. Zaokrouhleno na celá procenta získal Petr Pavel v druhém kole 58% hlasů, což jako jediný přesně trefil
