In this conversation with Julia Ioffe, we discuss her latest cover piece from The Atlantic, "What Putin Really Wants."
Our country seems fixated that Putin and Russia are malevolent geniuses manipulating our democratic institutions. However, after reporting from Russia over the past year, Ioffe believes Putin and his government got lucky.
The Russian hacking results of the 2016 elections exceeded Putin's greatest expectations. While back in the US we still have very little consensus over what the Russian hacking means. Ultimately Ioffe found that what Putin truly wants is a role for Russia on the global stage one they feel they have been shut out of over the past decade.
