In the United States held a mass protest against the sale of weapons. The campaign "March for our lives" goes in Washington, New York, Boston, Chicago, Houston, and city Parkland, Florida, where on 14. February a former student opened fire in the school. About 150 thousand people took to the streets of New York to march against the sale of weapons in the United States. In Washington the action was attended by 500 thousand people according to media reports. Americans took to the streets of cities demanding the US congress to tighten control over arms trafficking in the country. Students from Parkland, where 17 people were killed, initiated the event in the capital.
It is difficult for me to judge, whether it is correct, that every person can get a license to carry a weapon, because I live in Russia and in my country there is no such opportunity. I looked at a lot of websites with statistics and that's what I found. For self-defense purposes, weapons in the US are used 60 times more often than for crimes. And in most cases (80%) the case is limited to ‘psychological’ counterattack on the offender, without his murder or injury. In 1987, the state of Florida allowed citizens to buy weapons.
Since then, crime in the state has fallen by 21%, while in the whole country increased by 12%. In Canada, the opposite is true: there used to be weapons sold freely, and after the introduction of severe restrictions crime jumped up by 45%. In General, in the states of the USA, where the hidden carrying of loaded weapons is permitted, the overall level of criminal manifestations is less by 22%, the level of murder by 33%, robbery by 36%, robbery by 37%, and serious bodily harm by 14% lower than the average for the states, where such a permit is not. I want to say, I think, that the weapons saved many lives, perhaps even more, than it took. It may be necessary to amend the legislation regarding the carrying of weapons. But is this the only way to try to prevent mass execution of people, including in schools. The incident, that occurred in the United States on 14. February is not the first. Perhaps we need to consider other options to ensure the safety of children? Put metal detectors in the school so that students can't carry weapons. Of course this does not mean, that nobody can not carry a weapon to school, but it will make it not as easy as it is now. Perhaps the government should create a special commission, which shall give an opinion on, whether people can use weapons. But in my opinion, just to take and ban weapons in the country in which it has long been allowed, not so easy and not quite right. I hope very much, that the state will take measures, which will not allow repetition of sad events.
I wish you all peace and good!
