Ich verfolge seit ein paar Tagen die Ausbreitung des Coronavirus auf dieser Karte, was irgendwie gleichzeitig ein bisschen scary aber auch faszinierend ist, dass man das erste Mal in der Geschichte eine Virusausbreitung im Internet derart und beinahe in Echtzeit mitverfolgen kann.
Trotzdem denke ich, dass im Moment kein Grund zur Panik besteht. Coronaviren sind normalerweise harmlose Erkältungsviren, können aber auch wesentlich gefährlicher sein, so wie SARS im Jahr 2002/2003.
Die Gefährlichkeit des neuartigen Coronavirus (nCoV) ist derzeit noch schwer einschätzbar, aber ich vermute, dass es weniger gefährlich wie SARS aber vielleicht gefährlicher als eine Grippe ist.
Unglaublich ist auch, dass China ganze Millionenstädte seit Tagen unter Quarantäne stellt und für das Gesundheitssystem ist es sicher auch eine mega Herausforderungen, so viele erkrankte Menschen gleichzeitig behandeln zu müssen.
Einerseits können Viren aufgrund der voranschreitenden Globalisierung sehr rasch zu einer Pandemie werden, andererseits ist es faszinierend, wie die Menschheit dank des wissenschaftlichen Fortschritts und einer sehr gut vernetzten und koordinierten internationalen Zusammenarbeit solche Gefahren meistern kann. Ich bin zuversichtlich, dass es auch diesmal gelingen wird, die Verbreitung einzudämmen und den Virus unter Kontrolle zu bringen.

It is also unbelievable that China has been quarantining entire megacities with millions of people for days or weeks, and it is certainly a huge challenge for the health system as well to have to treat so many infected patients at the same time.
On the one hand, viruses can very quickly become a pandemic due to advancing globalization, and on the other hand it is fascinating how mankind can master such threats thanks to scientific progress and well-coordinated international cooperation. I am therefore confident that this time too we will succeed in containing the spread and bringing the virus under control.
